What rosin actually is
Rosin is what is left after you distil the volatile oil out of the oleoresin tapped from pine trees — Pinus palustris and other species in the Pinaceae family. In cosmetic ingredient terms it goes by Colophonium, which is its official INCI name in Europe, or simply Rosin in the US dictionary. Dermatologists and patch-testing literature tend to call it colophony.
Three names. One pine-derived substance.
Its listed cosmetic functions are binding, film forming, viscosity controlling — and depilatory. Making wax grip hair is not an off-label use of rosin. It is one of its four official jobs.
The reason it grips so well is a group of compounds called resin acids, chiefly abietic acid. That is also the reason some people cannot use it.
Why rosin is a problem for some people
Colophony is one of the better-studied contact allergens in dermatology. It sits on the standard screening panels — the T.R.U.E. Test carries it at 1200 mcg/cm², and the American Contact Dermatitis Society core series tests it at 20% in petrolatum. You do not put an ingredient on a standard patch test panel unless enough people react to it to be worth screening for.
A 2026 meta-analysis in Contact Dermatitis pooled 73 studies covering 459,757 dermatitis patients and put the prevalence of colophonium contact allergy at 3.54% (95% CI 3.01–4.16), with clinical relevance in 39.4% of those cases. Sensitisation rates have held steady for decades rather than declining.
Roughly three to four people in every hundred patch-tested for dermatitis react to it. And there are published case reports of allergic contact dermatitis traced specifically to depilatory wax — including a 28-year-old woman who developed swollen, itchy periorbital plaques within 24 hours of a brow and upper-lip wax, and patch-tested positive to both colophony and the two commercial waxes used on her.
It gets more allergenic as it ages
This is the part people miss. Rosin's sensitising power is driven largely by autoxidation — abietic acid reacting with air to form hydroperoxides, which are considerably more allergenic than the original molecule. An older tin of rosin-based wax is not chemically identical to a fresh one. Air exposure works against you.
A negative patch test does not fully clear you. Standard patch testing uses unmodified colophony, and the research notes it can miss reactions to the modified rosin esters that are actually used in epilating products. If you have reacted to a wax before but tested negative for colophony, a rosin ester is still on the table — bring the actual product to your dermatologist.
Rosin-free is a real category, not a marketing word
Professional wax distributors have carried rosin-free lines for years. UK pro supplier Salon Services runs an entire shop-by-feature category called Rosin-Free (Colophonium) stocking fourteen products across brands like Just Wax, Perron Rigot and S-PRO. Waxness sells a rosin-free hard wax built on synthetic resin.
Europe treats it as a genuine sensitisation risk at the regulatory level, too. Rosin carries a harmonised EU classification as a skin sensitiser, Category 1, and any product containing 0.1% or more has to be labelled: Contains rosin; colophony. May produce an allergic reaction.
So the category is real and the risk is documented. What is not real — and you will see this claimed a lot right now — is that rosin-free wax is some breakout 2026 industry trend. We looked for that. The only places asserting it are SEO content farms and brands selling rosin-free wax. There is no independent trade data behind it. We are not going to pretend otherwise to sell you something.
How to tell if your wax is actually rosin-free
Here is the genuinely useful part. Rosin is always disclosed — cosmetic regulation requires every ingredient to appear by its INCI name — but it is disclosed under names nobody recognises. Scan your label for any of these:

The shortcut: rosinate, abiet, colophon. Any of those three fragments anywhere in an ingredient name means pine resin.
One ingredient trips people up, including on our own label. Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate looks alarmingly like Pentaerythrityl Rosinate. It is not related. Ours is an antioxidant (you may know it as Irganox 1010) that keeps the wax from oxidising in the tin. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review assessed it in 2014 and found it safe as used; its safety file contains no resin acids, no abietic acid, no colophony. The two ingredients share only the pentaerythritol backbone — a synthetic polyol — and the acyl halves are chemically unrelated, so there is no cross-reactivity basis for someone with a colophony allergy.
What Crybaby uses instead
Our tackifier is synthetic. Both Meltdowns are built on Hydrogenated Poly (C6-20 Olefin), a synthetic polymer, alongside hydrogenated microcrystalline wax and an ethylene/VA copolymer. No pine resin, and no beeswax either, which is what makes them vegan.

Run that against the table above. No rosinate, no abiet, no colophon. Eight ingredients, none of them pine resin.
Now the honest part, because an ingredient post that only flatters the brand is not worth reading:
Our two waxes are not equally minimal. That 2025 study found colour additives in 67% of retail waxes — more common than rosin. Full On Meltdown, our coarse-hair formula, contains three of them (D&C Yellow No. 11, FD&C Yellow No. 5 Aluminium Lake, D&C Red No. 6 Aluminium Lake) plus mineral oil. It is rosin-free and beeswax-free, but it is not dye-free.
I'm Sensitive Meltdown is the one with nothing on that list — no rosin, no artificial dyes, no mineral oil, no beeswax. If you are reactive, that is the one to reach for, and it is the one we built for faces, PCOS and hormonal hair.
Also worth naming: Anise Alcohol on our sensitive label is a declarable EU fragrance allergen. That is exactly why it is broken out separately after Fragrance instead of hidden inside it. Rosin-free does not mean allergen-free, and we would rather you see it than not.
What rosin-free does and does not mean
The claim we will make, because it is airtight: a wax containing no rosin-derived ingredient cannot cause colophony contact allergy. That is not marketing, it is arithmetic.
The claim we will not make: that synthetic-resin wax is broadly gentler or lower-risk than rosin wax. We went looking for a head-to-head study comparing irritation or reaction rates between the two. There isn't one. Every brand asserting it — and plenty do — is asserting it without evidence, and we are not adding to that pile.
Rosin-free removes one specific, well-documented allergen from the equation. It does not make a wax hypoallergenic, it does not mean you cannot react to something else in it, and it does not override technique. Overheated wax burns skin regardless of what is holding it together.

How common is rosin in wax, really?
A 2025 study in Dermatitis analysed twelve retail depilatory wax products and found colophony in seven of them — 58%. Colour additives were found in 67%.
Does rosin-free mean hypoallergenic?
No. Rosin-free means one specific documented allergen is absent, so the product cannot cause colophony contact allergy. It does not rule out reacting to fragrance, colour additives or anything else in the formula. There is also no study showing synthetic-resin wax is broadly lower-risk than rosin wax, and we would not claim otherwise.
How do I check whether my own wax contains rosin?
Read the full ingredient list and look for the fragments rosinate, abiet or colophon in any ingredient name. Those three cover almost every rosin derivative used in cosmetics. Tall oil is a partial exception — it is roughly 35–60% rosin acids.
I reacted to a wax but my colophony patch test was negative. What now?
That happens. Standard patch tests use unmodified colophony, and the literature notes this can miss reactions to the modified rosin esters actually used in epilating products. Bring the physical product to your dermatologist so it can be tested directly rather than relying on the screening panel alone.
