How to wax your underarms at home

Pits are the trust fall of waxing — small, a little awkward, hair growing two directions on purpose. Nail the technique and it takes about five minutes a side. No salon, no white-knuckling.

Before and after underarm waxing with Crybaby Wax

Good news up front: pits are one of the most satisfying areas to wax, and once you nail the technique it takes about five minutes a side. Here's exactly how to do it at home with hard wax.

Why wax instead of shave?

Smoother for longer. Shaving lasts a day or two. Waxing pulls hair from the root, so you're stubble-free for two to four weeks.

Less irritation over time. Razors drag across thin pit skin daily and cause razor burn, darkening, and ingrowns. Waxing means fewer passes and less friction.

Finer regrowth. Repeated waxing weakens the follicle, so hair grows back softer and sparser. Shaving just blunts the tip — that's the prickle.

What you'll need

How to wax, step by step

1

Grow it out. Hair needs to be about ¼ inch — the length of a grain of rice. Too short and the wax can't grip; too long and it hurts more. Skip shaving for 10–14 days first.

2

Clean and dry. Wash off deodorant, sweat, and oil. Deodorant residue is the #1 reason wax won't grip. Pat completely dry.

3

Powder up. Dust on A Wail of a Time. It absorbs moisture so the wax sticks to hair, not damp skin.

4

Test the temp. Heated wax should be the consistency of honey and warm — not hot. Dab a little on your inner wrist first.

5

Map your hair growth. Pit hair grows in two directions. Lift your arm, look closely, and plan to wax each section in the direction the hair grows.

6

Apply with the grain. Spread a thick, even layer in the direction of growth, leaving a thicker lip at the bottom edge for your pull tab.

7

Let it set. Wait until the wax is firm to the touch but still slightly pliable — about 5–10 seconds. It should sound hollow when you tap it.

8

Hold skin taut and pull against growth. This is the whole game. Pull the skin tight with one hand, then flick the wax off fast and low (close to the skin), opposite the direction of growth. Never pull straight up.

9

Press, don't rub. Immediately press your palm on the area to calm the sting.

10

Repeat for the second direction, then switch arms.

Why our wax is kinder to pits

Our hard wax is stripless — it shrink-wraps around the hair and lifts off in one piece, so it grabs the hair and not your delicate pit skin. The low melting point means it goes on warm, not scalding, which matters a lot in a thin-skinned area like your underarms. Translation: less ouch, fewer “why did I do this” moments.

Aftercare

  • Skip deodorant, tight synthetic tops, and the gym for 24 hours — freshly waxed follicles are open and easily irritated.
  • Smooth on You Big Softie Oil to calm and hydrate.
  • Start gentle exfoliation 48 hours later with Ride or Cry AHA Splash to keep ingrowns away.

Frequently asked questions

Does waxing your underarms hurt?

There's a quick sting on the pull, but underarm hair is fine and the area is small, so it's over fast. Hard wax only grips the hair, which makes it far gentler than strip wax or epilating.

How long does underarm hair need to be?

About ¼ inch, or roughly the length of a grain of rice. That's usually 10–14 days of growth after shaving.

How long does underarm waxing last?

Two to four weeks, depending on your hair cycle. With regular waxing, regrowth gets finer and slower.

Why won't the wax grip my underarm hair?

Almost always leftover deodorant or moisture. Cleanse thoroughly, dry completely, and dust with priming powder before you start.
