The short answer
Yes, you can wax if you use retinol. You just can't wax while it's active on that skin.
- Over-the-counter retinol and prescription retinoids: the American Academy of Dermatology suggests stopping them 2 to 5 days before waxing your face. We like the safe end of that: 5 days for retinol, a full week for prescription strength.
- Oral isotretinoin (Accutane): no waxing at all while you're taking it, and for 6 months after your last pill. This one is not a judgment call.
- Not sure what you're on? Ask your dermatologist before you heat up the Meltdown Machine.
Why retinol and wax don't mix
Retinoids speed up how fast your skin sheds and loosen the bonds between surface skin cells. That's great for texture and breakouts. It's less great when you press warm wax onto that skin and pull.
Wax is designed to grip hair. On retinol-treated skin, it can also grip the top layer of skin, which is now holding on a lot less tightly. Pull, and that layer can come off with the hair. Estheticians call it lifting: a red, shiny, stinging patch that may weep or scab over the next few days. It's not a burn, but you should treat it like a small wound.
Hard wax helps because it shrink-wraps the hair instead of gluing itself to skin the way strip wax does. But no wax, ours included, makes retinol-thinned skin safe to pull. The pause is the fix.
The pause timeline
| What you use | Pause before waxing that area | When to restart |
|---|---|---|
| OTC retinol, retinal, retinyl palmitate | 5 days | Once skin is calm, usually 2 to 3 days after |
| Prescription or strong retinoids (tretinoin, tazarotene, trifarotene, adapalene/Differin) | 7 days, or whatever your dermatologist says | 3 days after, if there's no redness |
| Exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic), scrubs, at-home peels | 3 to 5 days | 2 to 3 days after |
| Oral isotretinoin (Accutane) | No waxing during treatment or for 6 months after | Ask your dermatologist |
One note on "that area": the pause applies wherever wax is going. If your retinol goes on your whole face, it's on your upper lip and brows too. If your retinoid is a body lotion, it counts for your bikini line and legs.
Your pre-wax week, step by step
7 to 5 days out. Stop your retinoid on the area you're waxing. Swap in a plain cleanser, a basic moisturizer, and SPF. Boring skin is happy wax skin.
2 to 3 days out. No exfoliating, no scrubs, no peel pads. Check your hair length. About a quarter inch is the sweet spot.
Wax day. Start with clean, completely dry skin. Dust on A Wail of a Time Powder so the wax grabs hair, not you. Use I'm Sensitive Meltdown for face and reactive skin, and do a small test patch first if it's your first wax since stopping retinol. On tiny areas like the upper lip, Stiff Upper Rip Pull Tabs give you a real handle to grip, so you're not picking at the edge of the wax.
Right after. Smooth on Just Cool It Mango Gel to calm redness. Got sticky leftovers? You Big Softie Oil melts them off without scrubbing.
The next 48 to 72 hours. No retinol, no acids, no saunas, no hot yoga, and keep that skin out of direct sun. Then ease back into your routine.
"I forgot and waxed anyway." Now what?
It happens. Here's how to tell, and what to do.
Signs of lifting: a patch that looks shiny or wet, stings more than normal post-wax redness, or turns crusty over the next day or two.
What to do:
- Stop. Don't re-wax or tweeze that spot.
- Rinse with cool water and pat dry.
- Cover with a thin layer of plain petroleum jelly to keep it moist while it heals.
- Don't pick the scab. Seriously. Picking is how a bad day turns into a mark.
- Skip makeup, actives, and retinol on that spot until it's fully healed.
- Wear SPF on it every day, since healing skin can darken in the sun.
- See a dermatologist if redness or swelling lasts more than two days, or if it's oozing, spreading, or getting more painful instead of less.
Don't wax that area again until the skin looks and feels completely normal.
Quick FAQ
Can I use retinol the night after I wax?
Not yet. Give freshly waxed skin 48 to 72 hours before any retinoid or acid touches it.
I use retinol on my face. Can I still wax my bikini line?
Yes, as long as the retinoid isn't going on your bikini area. The pause only matters where wax goes.
What about bakuchiol or other "retinol alternatives"?
They aren't retinoids, but they're often paired with exfoliating acids. Treat any active the same way: pause it a few days before and patch test first.
Is it safer to just shave instead?
Shaving won't lift skin, but on coarse or hormonal hair it grows back in a day or two. If you'd rather keep your retinol nightly with zero breaks, talk to your dermatologist about the best hair removal method for you.
The bottom line
Pause the potion, then wax. Five days for retinol, a week for prescription retinoids, six months after Accutane. Your skin stays where it belongs, and the only crying happening is the fun kind.
