A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER

The first time I waxed my face, I was 16. It was the week before prom.

CAT SMITH
CAT SMITH Founder, Crybaby Wax

HI, I'M CAT.

I've had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome since puberty, even before I knew what it was. For me, PCOS meant thick, coarse hair on my chin, cheeks and neck. I had to shave or tweeze every single day to try and hide my biggest embarrassment.

I tried everything to remove the dark, thick hair. Tweezing left broken hairs and ingrown hair. Drugstore wax strips removed more hair than skin. Hair removal creams burned and irritated the skin and still left stubble.

Worst of all was laser hair removal - the treatment that was supposed to fix everything, triggered paradoxical hypertrichosis and made even more hair grow on my face and neck.

After more than a decade in the beauty industry and a lot of quiet time at home during COVID, I started sketching out the brand I'd been looking for my whole life: a waxing system that could actually remove thick, coarse hair, with clean, organic ingredients and was truly less-painful for sensitive skin.

The PCOS Facial Hair Kit is for anyone exhausted by daily shaving, plucking, and hair removal methods that leave you worse off than when you started. If 16-year-old me could see this, she wouldn't believe it. I hope it takes a little weight off your PCOS journey, the way I wish something had taken it off mine.

"Best wax I've used!"

As someone with PCOS I have a lot of chin, lip, and sideburn hair on my face and waxing was always painful for me. The first time I tried the wax, I thought it may have been my mind playing tricks on me as I felt no pain when waxing my chin and very little pain when doing my sideburns which is where I usually feel the most pain. I also left both waxing sessions with practically no red marks on my face. Safe to say I will definitely be using this kit from now on.

"Cat's story is mine. This product is the receipt."

I read the founder letter three times before I ordered. Then I waxed my chin and stomach and almost cried because someone finally made the thing. The ingrowns I used to get from shaving? Gone in two weeks.

"I'm a licensed esthetician with PCOS. I trust this on my own face."

I wax clients all day and was using a hard wax on my own face that left me red for hours. I switched to Crybaby Wax for personal use 8 months ago. Same removal, half the irritation. I also use it on my PCOS clients.

"Spironolactone helped a little. This helped more."

I've been on spiro for 3 years and it slowed my symptoms down but didn't stop them completely. Waxing every 3 weeks with the PCOS Kit means I actually don't think about my chin every time I look in the mirror and I am not worried people will feel stubble when they touch my face.

"The first kit that didn't smell like a chemistry set."

The coconut scent is genuinely nice and the wax pulls clean. I do my stomach and chin in the one sitting now and I don't have to think about touchups for 2 weeks.

It will not stop hormonal hair from growing, but consistent waxing trains the follicle so hair returns finer, softer, and slower over time. Because hard wax pulls from the root instead of cutting at the surface, most PCOS customers see visibly thinner regrowth by the third or fourth session, and sparser patches after about six months of waxing every 3 to 5 weeks. The PCOS Facial Hair Kit pairs our low-temp hard wax with the pre and post-care that keeps that progress going. See the full six-month timeline in our PCOS waxing guide.

For most PCOS facial hair, low-temp hard wax is the most sustainable option. Shaving leaves stubble within 24 hours and causes ingrowns, and laser often misses the lighter, finer hairs hormonal skin grows. Waxing pulls coarse chin, lip, cheek, and neck hair from the root, so regrowth comes in finer over consistent 3 to 5 week sessions. Cleanse and fully dry the skin first, work in small strips in the direction of growth, and pull parallel to the skin. The step-by-step is in our chin, cheeks and neck guide.

Yes. Our I'm Sensitive Meltdown hard wax was formulated by a licensed esthetician with PCOS to work at a low temperature, around 150°F, so it grips coarse hair without burning the thin, reactive skin on the face. It is vegan and free of parabens, phthalates, synthetic dyes, and added fragrance, the ingredients most likely to irritate hormonal skin. It is the same wax our pro estheticians use on clients' faces. Avoid waxing within 7 days of retinol or AHAs, and skip any skin that is actively broken out or sunburned.

Yes. Waxing removes hair from the root rather than slicing it at the surface like shaving or snapping it like tweezing, which is the number one cause of ingrowns. Most PCOS customers see ingrowns reduce significantly within 2 to 3 waxing cycles. For best results, apply Ride or Cry AHA Exfoliating Splash directly after waxing, then 2 to 3 times a week on the waxed area to gently exfoliate and keep the follicle clear between sessions. Always wax clean, fully dry skin so the wax grabs hair and not dead surface skin.

Many of our customers wax while on spironolactone, metformin, birth control, or inositol with no issues. The wax sits on the surface of your skin and pulls from the root, so it does not interact with what is in your bloodstream. If you use a topical retinoid or tretinoin, pause it for 5 to 7 days before waxing, since it thins the skin barrier and raises lift risk. Every body is different, so check with your doctor if you are on a medication that affects skin sensitivity.

For PCOS facial hair, hard wax is better. Soft wax needs a fabric strip and grips both hair and skin, which is rough on thin, reactive facial skin and raises the risk of lifting. Hard wax like I'm Sensitive Meltdown hardens around the hair and lifts off in one piece, so it pulls dense, coarse hair from the chin, lip, and neck while leaving the skin behind. Soft wax still has its place for large areas with finer hair, like legs and arms.

Most people with PCOS get 2 to 3 weeks of smooth skin per session, a little shorter than the usual 3 to 6 weeks because hormonal hair has a faster growth cycle. The trade-off is worth it: hard wax pulls coarse chin, lip, and neck hair from the root, so regrowth comes back finer and patchier each round, and many customers space their sessions further apart after a few months of waxing every 3 to 5 weeks. It is not permanent, since the follicles stay active, but it ends the daily shave-and-stubble cycle. The PCOS Facial Hair Kit and our step-by-step PCOS waxing guide walk you through making each result last longer.

The Crybaby Wax Promise

NO PAIN, NO GAIN? WE CALL BS

We're on your side. And we built the kit to prove it.

THE PCOS WAXING GUIDE

The best wax for PCOS facial hair is a low-melt, professional-grade hard wax paired with calming aftercare like an aloe gel. PCOS facial hair is coarser, denser, and concentrated on the chin, jaw, and upper lip, where skin is thin and easily inflamed. Hard wax grips the hair, not the skin, while a low melting point prevents the burning and post-wax redness that high-temperature salon waxes cause on PCOS-prone skin.

Crybaby’s PCOS Kit is built around the same low-melt hard wax licensed estheticians use in salons. It is formulated for coarse, hormonally-driven hair, with skin-safe ingredients designed for repeat use on sensitive PCOS skin.

What is the best wax for PCOS facial hair?

The best wax for PCOS facial hair is a low-melt professional-grade hard wax. Hard wax hardens around the hair shaft and lifts thick, coarse hair from the root in one motion, without ripping at the surrounding skin the way soft wax and paper strips do. Crybaby’s I’m Sensitive Meltdown was formulated specifically for PCOS-grade hair: low melting point for face-safe application, a coconut-scented and rosin-free formula made for sensitive skin, and a coarse-hair grip tested on real hirsutism customers.

Why does PCOS hair need a different wax?

PCOS triggers androgen-driven terminal hair growth, the same hair type as a beard, but on the face. This hair is:

  • Two to three times thicker than peach fuzz
  • Rooted deeper in the follicle
  • Concentrated on chin, jawline, sideburns, and upper lip
  • Surrounded by skin that is often acne-prone, hyperpigmented, or barrier-compromised

Standard at-home wax kits aren’t built for this hair type. They’re formulated for fine peach fuzz on healthy skin. The result on PCOS hair: stubble, breakage, ingrowns, and post-wax redness that lasts days.

What is the best hair removal method for hirsutism?

Hirsutism is the medical term for coarse, dark, terminal hair that grows in a male pattern on women, along the upper lip, chin, jaw, neck, chest, and stomach. It is one of the most common signs of PCOS, and it is driven by androgens, the hormones that tell a follicle to grow thick hair instead of fine, soft fuzz.

For the hair itself, the best at-home method is a low-melt hard wax. It removes the whole hair from the root, so regrowth comes back finer and slower than the blunt stubble shaving leaves behind. Unlike depilatory creams, it does not sit and react on already-sensitive skin, and unlike tweezing, it does not snap hair below the surface, which is the leading cause of ingrown hair.

Waxing manages the hair you already have. It does not change your hormones, so the most complete results come from pairing it with whatever medical plan you and your doctor have chosen. Crybaby Wax’s I’m Sensitive Meltdown is a low-melt hard wax built for exactly this hair type.

Is waxing safe for hormonal facial hair?

Yes. Waxing is safe for hormonal facial hair when you use a face-appropriate wax and good technique. Hormonal facial hair, the kind PCOS and other endocrine conditions cause, is thicker and more deeply rooted than ordinary fuzz, so it needs a wax that can grip coarse hair without overheating thin facial skin.

A low-melt hard wax is the safest choice because:

  • It hardens around the hair and lifts off in one piece, so you are not dragging hot wax and cloth strips across delicate skin.
  • It works at a low temperature, well below high-heat salon soft wax, which lowers the risk of burns and lingering redness.
  • It sits on the surface and pulls from the root. It does not absorb into your bloodstream, so it does not interact with spironolactone, metformin, inositol, or birth control.

If you use a medication that thins the skin or raises sensitivity, such as a topical retinoid or isotretinoin, check with your doctor before waxing, since fragile skin can lift during a pull.

How do women with PCOS remove chin hair?

Chin hair is the single most common PCOS hair complaint, and the most frustrating to manage, because the chin and jaw are where PCOS hair grows thickest and returns fastest. Most people cycle through shaving, tweezing, threading, and creams before they find something that lasts.

Here is what actually holds up on coarse chin hair, and what does not:

  • Shaving buys one smooth day, then sharp, blunt regrowth within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Tweezing pulls one hair at a time and often snaps it below the surface, which causes ingrown hair and, over years, can distort the follicle.
  • Waxing removes every hair in the area from the root in one motion. Regrowth takes one to three weeks and comes in softer, because the follicle is emptied rather than cut.

For the chin specifically, use a low-melt hard wax, press it on against the direction of growth, and pull fast and close to the skin. Follow with a calming aloe gel, and use an AHA exfoliating splash between waxes to keep ingrown hair down. Our step-by-step PCOS face waxing guide walks through the chin, cheeks, and neck.

The PCOS Facial Hair Kit was built around this exact routine: I’m Sensitive Meltdown to remove, Just Cool It mango gel to calm, and Ride or Cry AHA splash to prevent ingrowns.

How Crybaby differs from other at-home wax kits

  • Esthetician-formulated. Built and used by licensed waxing professionals, the same wax sold into salons.
  • Low-melt formula. Hardens at the lowest viable temperature to prevent burns on sensitive facial skin.
  • Coarse-hair grip. Tested on PCOS-grade terminal hair, not just peach fuzz.
  • Sold to both consumers and licensed pros. Formulation held to professional standards.

Is Crybaby better than Tress Wellness, Starpil, or Amazon wax for PCOS?

Most at-home wax kits are built for general body hair or for the salon, not for PCOS facial hair. That gap matters, because PCOS hair is coarse and hormonally driven, and it grows on thin facial skin that reddens and breaks out easily. Here is how Crybaby Wax compares to the kits people usually try first.

BrandBuilt for PCOS facial hair? What sets it apart
Crybaby WaxYesLow-melt hard wax formulated for coarse, hormonal hair, with a sensitive-skin routine that removes, soothes, and prevents ingrowns. Built by a founder with PCOS, and sold to both consumers and licensed estheticians.
Tress WellnessNo, generalBeginner hard-wax beads sold mostly through Amazon, made for all-over body hair with a one-kit-fits-all approach. Not formulated or guided for coarse PCOS facial hair.
StarpilNo, pro lineProfessional salon hard wax in color-coded formulas you choose yourself. Built for licensed estheticians and general waxing, with no PCOS-specific routine or aftercare.
Generic Amazon kitsNoLow-cost assorted kits aimed at fine peach fuzz. Formula and temperature control vary widely, with no sensitive-skin aftercare or PCOS guidance.

All four can pull hair. The difference is fit. Crybaby Wax is the only one of these designed around PCOS facial hair specifically: a low-melt formula that stays comfortable on the face, plus the two steps coarse-hair skin actually needs, a calming gel to bring down redness and an AHA splash to keep ingrown hair from forming. The PCOS Facial Hair Kit packages all three together. If you are still weighing waxing against other methods, see laser vs wax for PCOS and shaving vs waxing for PCOS. If your hormonal hair comes from a gender-affirming transition rather than PCOS, see our guide to transgender hair removal.

What’s in the PCOS Kit, and is it safe for PCOS skin?

PCOS skin is often acne-prone, easily irritated, and waxed more often than most, so what touches it matters. Every product in the PCOS Facial Hair Kit is vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, and phthalate-free. Here is what each one does, and what is in it.

I’m Sensitive Meltdown The remover · coconut-scented hard wax

A low-melt, strip-free hard wax that grips coarse hair and lifts it from the root. It melts at roughly 130°F, lower than a fresh cup of coffee, so it stays comfortable on the face, and it is rosin-free, since rosin is a common waxing sensitizer.

Coconut-scented from fragrance, not coconut oil. Vegan and rosin-free.

Ride or Cry The ingrown-hair preventer · AHA splash

A multi-acid exfoliating splash used between waxes to keep follicles clear and bring down ingrown hair. Use it in the days between waxing, not on freshly waxed skin.

Five AHAs (glycolic, lactic, malic, tartaric, citric) with aloe, white willow bark, and fruit extracts. pH 3.5 to 4.2. Fragrance-free.

Just Cool It The soother · calming mango gel

An aloe-based cooling gel you smooth on right after waxing to calm and de-redden the skin.

Aloe vera leaf juice with neem, turmeric, holy basil, and seaweed extracts. pH 4.7 to 5.6. Lightly scented with a natural fragrance blend, so it is not fragrance-free.

What do licensed estheticians say about PCOS facial hair?

PCOS facial hair is a medical symptom, not a grooming failure, and it is something licensed estheticians work with every day. The pros who wax coarse, hormonal hair for a living tend to agree on a few points:

  • Hirsutism affects most women with PCOS, by many estimates 70 to 80 percent, and is caused by elevated androgens acting on the hair follicle.
  • It is best managed on two fronts at once: medical treatment for the underlying hormones, and direct hair removal for the hair that is already there.
  • Mechanical and light-based removal methods, including waxing, epilation, and laser, are standard, recommended ways to reduce unwanted hair alongside medical therapy.

In plain terms: your doctor handles the hormones, a good wax handles the hair, and the two work best together.

This guide is for information only and is not a substitute for medical advice. If your facial hair changed suddenly or comes with other new symptoms, talk to your doctor, since hirsutism can have causes beyond PCOS.

Crybaby Wax is an easy yes in my treatment room. From their vegan hard wax to You Big Softie for barrier protection and skin hydration, Crybaby Wax has always helped me deliver amazing results and protect my clients' skin.
